The Alan Sanders Show

Nov 9, 2022

Let me start off saying today's show is going to be a little different. I didn't want to bring in any sound bites or news stories. I wanted to bring you my own thoughts as I have been trying to reconcile what happened during the 2022 midterm election. I know I got it wrong and I am sorry for that. But, I wasn't the only one. In fact, there were as many people on the Left who were just as certain of the red wave. Were there gains for the GOP? Yes. But, was it a wave? Not at all.

So, what happened? How did so many miss what was happening in our country? Places like Florida, Georgia and Texas did very well with the Republican vote. But, places like Pennsylvania, Michigan and New York didn't do well at all, even though those voters are suffering just as much from the poor policies of this White House.

The tried-and-true axiom for any midterms is if the economy isn't doing well, the party in the White House will suffer losses in Congress during the midterm. It's been like that my whole life. But, that didn't happen this time. There were fragmented parts of our nation who still chose to support the wishes of the state, rather than address the concerns of their own pocketbooks.

The question for me to ponder is – why?

As I ponder this question over the course of the show, I do think we cannot ignore the long-lasting effects Covid has on those who bought the government's mandates hook, line and sinker. I believe, over the course of the past two years, enough people were reprogrammed to believe the state will always be there to protect them and no matter how bad things are, just keep doing what the state says to do. It's a bizarre form of battered spouse syndrome. While people may be in a miserable circumstance, at least there is comfort in familiarity. The risk of the unknown becomes a powerful fear and fear is a great means of control.

I don't know if what I conclude holds water and I would be interested to get feedback from you as a loyal listener. I feel like it makes sense and helps to explain why the divide in our nation is worse now than than at any point in my lifetime. The question now is, how do we fix it? How do convince the victim to leave the toxic relationship? I fear this is not something we will be able to fix in the short term. It's going to take a long time to undo all of the damage done by those who demand complete and blind allegiance to the state.
